Watch and hear Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter perform this beautifully simple song by Greg Brown:
One Cool Remove
One cool remove
One cool remove
And forever let me stay
One cool remove away
One cool remove
One cool remove
See it all in a passion play
One cool remove away
CHORUS:
One cool remove from the white sun,
Rising like a cloud above the land.
One cool remove from the red moon,
Falling like a hand.
One cool remove
One cool remove
And neither come nor go nor stay
One cool remove away.
CHORUS
One cool remove
One cool remove
And neither come nor go nor stay
One cool remove away.
(Written by Greg Brown.)
Personal note
This is one of the fabulous songs Shawn Colvin picked for her 1994 album Cover Girl. As the title slyly indicates, she covers other people’s work on this one. Among these are Tom Waits, Sting, Steve Earle, Robbie Robertson, Jimmy Webb and Bob Dylan.
The discovery of Shawn Colvin herself I owe to her appearance in the grandiose Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert of October 16, 1992, that united more than 40 stars of the music scene, all of whom performed songs written by Dylan. Among them were George Harrison, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Ron Wood, Lou Reed, Johnny Winter and Roger McGuinn.
Sinéad O’Connor was booed out by the audience as a consequence of an incident on Saturday Night Live on October 3, where she had criticized Pope John Paul II and the Roman Catholic Church for cases of sexual abuse within the church that had come to light. (For details see the Wikipedia article on Sinéad O’Connor.)
Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Rosanne Cash performed You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere during the concert.
Plain old gorgeous, this mingling of two voices. Thanks for putting up this find. G
Listen to S. Colvin & M. C. Carpenter doing “Amelia”, by Joni Mitchell. I think you’ll love it.
